Joshua W. Powell is a longtime resident of Dublin and Laurens County. He is the son of the Reverend John W. Powell, Jr. (Patricia) and Renee B. Fraser (Craig). He is married to Lisa (formerly Bloodworth) and they have three children. Lisa is a procurement specialist with the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Program.
After graduating from West Laurens High School in 2000, Joshua received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University, majoring in Finance. He obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta in 2008.
After law school, Joshua practiced law with the law firm of Ralph Jackson, P.C. in Dublin. From 2010 until 2016, Joshua served as an Assistant District Attorney for the Oconee Judicial Circuit. Joshua was appointed to serve as Attorney for the City of Dublin and prosecutor for Dublin Municipal Court in January of 2016.
Joshua is a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church where he sings in the chancel choir and serves on the Security Committee. He is a past President and Vice-President of the Dublin Circuit Bar Association. Joshua is a graduate of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development and serves as ex-officio member of the Dublin-Laurens Teen Court Board of Directors.
According to the City of Dublin’s charter, the City Attorney is vested with the responsibility of being legal advisor to the City of Dublin and shall perform such duties as required by law and the Mayor and Council. Joshua attends all city council meetings and attends committee and board meetings as needed. He advises the city manager and all departments of the city on legal matters. Joshua represents the city in the prosecution of all traffic and other misdemeanor offenses in the Municipal Court of the City. Joshua also represents the city in nuisance abatement actions to remove or repair dilapidated and/or blighted properties throughout the city.
